Here's your chance to own a FULLY SERVICED (ultrasonic wash, rinse, and lubrication) Hamilton Electric Altair watch. Pictured in Rene Rondeau's book "The Watch Of The Future" on pages 130-133, it was released in December 1961 with an original price of $125.00 (metal band), and $110.00 (leather strap). It is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown, and band. It runs great and keeps time to well under 30 seconds variation per day, and has a brand new battery just installed. The hack function works properly, and the watch starts right up each time the crown is pushed in from the setting position to the running position. It was inspected and serviced by Rene Rondeau in July of 2011, and stored since that time, but has just been freshly serviced. As a plus, it has had a BRAND NEW OLD STOCK D-PIN installed in the balance, so it will run virtually as it did from the factory.
The Altair is probably the most coveted of all the Hamilton Electrics among collectors. It had a very small production run of around 1600, so it is also very rare. The dramatic Arbib styling is not the principle reason for it's failure, however. It was the detached lugs, which are very weak, and too easily bent or broken in normal wear. This makes surviving Altairs even more rare.
The Altair represents what makes these Hamilton Electric Watches so unique. It was far ahead of its time in styling and mechanics, but flawed in its basic design, making it a must for a complete Hamilton Electric collection.
